UTICA, NY – Saranac has mastered the forces of NITRO in their newest year-round beer, Disruption Brown Ale. Disruption has made Saranac the first craft brewery on the east coast to release a nitrogenated can beer.
“This is huge for Saranac,” said Fred Matt, Saranac President. “Nitro is awesome because it accentuates the deep richness of the grains. We took our time and explored 10 or so different styles before we hit the beer jackpot. It wasn’t easy but Disruption is the perfect pairing for nitro.”
Saranac attributes packaging challenges to be the lead barrier facing the proliferation of the style. Because nitrogen is insoluble in liquids and more volatile than CO2, breweries must develop entirely new processes and equipment to package nitro beer. In Disruption, Saranac uses widgets in each can to keep the gas dissolved in the beer.
“Disruption was a very lengthy process of trial and error and a great deal of pouring,” said Dan Voce, Saranac Packaging Manager. “We were dealing with the smallest margins of error – nitrogen doses down to the milli seconds of dosing impacted how the product handled.”
Saranac and other craft breweries have only begun exploring nitro. Saranac is coming off of a positive response in test markets with their break through can.

Disruption nitro features big and creamy malt flavor from a distinctive mix of dark, roasted malts and a light earthy-fruit hoppiness. The nitro accentuates the sweet, malt character of the grains for greater depth in cocoa, caramel and coffee flavors. Disruption is a dark molasses color – don’t expect your average brown ale.
“Disruption is made for nitro because the nitro enhances the creaminess of the malts,” said Rich Michaels, Saranac’s Quality and Innovation Manager. “Immediately nitro’s difference is visible in the cascading pour. Nitro has smaller bubbles and forms denser foam, which delivers a thicker mouth feel and creamy finish.”
Disruption is now available in 4-pack cans at beer retailers all year long. Retail locations can be found using Saranac’s Find a Beer locator.
