The New York City outpost of Danish craft brewery Mikkeller has permanently closed after a little more than two years.
In a Facebook post this morning, Mikkeller announced that it had made “the difficult decision” to shutter the location at Citi Field in Queens, home of the New York Mets.
“Mikkeller is consolidating its NYC brewery with its San Diego brewery and closing Mikkeller NYC,” the company wrote. “Thank you for your support over the past two and a half years; we are extremely grateful to have been part of the New York brewing community, and to have had the opportunity to present our beers in this incredible location.
“We loved our time in Citi Field and wish everyone the best during this difficult time,” the company added.
The location was hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented fans from attending Major League Baseball games during the 2020 season.
Mikkeller said it will continue distributing its beer to New York stores, bars and restaurants. The company, which started self-distributing its products when it launched the location in March 2018, forged a partnership with Remarkable Liquids for statewide distribution in New York state in November 2018.
Mikkeller NYC opened the 10,000 sq. ft. ballpark brewery and restaurant with a 20-barrel brewhouse in early 2018. The New York location was one of around 40 worldwide Mikkeller outposts.
Mikkel Borg Bjergsø told Brewbound in August 2018 that real estate firm Sterling Equities, which then was a majority owner of the Mets, was a partner in Mikkeller NYC.
In September, billionaire Steve Cohen struck a deal to acquire a majority stake in the franchise from the Wilpon and Katz families, which run the firm. A majority of Major League Baseball club owners must approve of the acquisition.
Bjergsø did not respond to a request for comment as of press time.
