LARKSPUR, Calif. — With the arrival of its Sancho Lager, the Marin Brewing Company is offering patrons a new beer and an urban legend.
Marin Brewing’s brewmaster, Arne Johnson, an expert in all things Sancho, relishes the chance to share the details of the legend of Sancho anytime he’s asked.
Sancho, according to the Urban Dictionary is the “the other man” in Spanish slang. He is said to be that guy your girlfriend is cheating on you with; he’s often a favorite topic in bars and breweries.
Johnson found his beer inspiration for Sancho while traveling through Mexico in his younger years. The Brewco’s Sancho Lager is a variation on the Vienna-style lager, of which the Mexican brewed Dos Equis Amber is a classic example.
Johnson’s Sancho Lager is brewed with more than 95 percent Weyermann Wiener (Vienna) Malt and has the subtly sweet, toasty malt qualities and dry, crisp finish classic to the style, but with a slightly lighter color. Johnson said his Sancho Lager is super crushable, “but definitely, ain’t nothing to sneeze at!”
Sancho Lager comes in at 5.3 percent ABV and 25 IBUs.
Malts: Weyermann Vienna, Weyermann Munich Light, Weyermann CaraMunich
Hops: German Hallertau
Yeast: Augustiner Lager
