E-commerce delivery platform DoorDash and discount grocery chain ALDI have expanded their partnership to include beverage-alcohol delivery in 21 states, the companies announced today.
“In addition to giving merchants a new way to reach customers, on-demand alcohol delivery helps partners grow their business,” DoorDash VP of new verticals Fuad Hannon said in a press release.
DoorDash and ALDI first joined forces in February 2023 to offer on-demand grocery delivery from nearly 2,100 stores to consumers in 38 states.
The expanded partnership with ALDI will include bev-alc delivery from more than 1,200 locations, encompassing the chain’s “private-label selection of top-quality, award-winning wine, beer, hard seltzers and ciders,” per the release. More than 90% of all products sold at ALDI are private-label, “ALDI exclusive brands,” according to the company’s website.
“ALDI offers an everyday selection of private-label adult beverages and rotates in limited, seasonal flavors so there’s something for everyone,” ALDI VP of national buying Scott Patton said in the release.
ALDI’s beer selection includes 11 styles: Aldager Amber Lager, Brecken Bock, Brens Lager, Holland Lager 1839, Hopping Nomad Session IPA, Independence Harbor Amber Ale, Merchants Keep IPA, Monterrey Cerveza, Wernesgrüner Pilsner, White Tide Belgian White Ale and Wild Range IPA. The private-label-focused chain also offers Vista Bay Hard Seltzer, Wicked Grove Hard Cider, Ashwood Hard Root Beer and Big Brother Hard Root Beer.
ALDI’s wine portfolio is more extensive than its beer offerings, with 39 red wines, 23 white wines, seven roeés, six sparkling wines and eight specialty wines available.
DoorDash, which connects users to restaurants and retailers via a network of gig economy delivery drivers and also offers click-and-collect services, first added both groceries and alcohol in 2020 amid stay-home orders driven by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since then, DoorDash has reported 100% year-over-year (YoY) growth between 2021 and 2022, according to the company’s Alcohol Online Ordering Trends Report. DoorDash’s bev-alc portfolio includes more than “100,000 SKUs available for purchase across thousands of grocers and restaurants nationwide,” according the release.
The inclusion of bev-alc products has added value for DoorDash participants across channels, Hannon said in the release.
“On DoorDash, adding alcohol may increase grocers’ average order value by up to 30%,” he said. “Order values for U.S. convenience orders were on average over 50% higher when alcohol was added.
“We’ve worked hard to build a trusted alcohol ordering and delivery experience,” Hannon continued. “The expansion of our partnership with ALDI reinforces our commitment to provide growth opportunities for local merchants, while simultaneously providing a safe, high-quality experience for customers.”
