The price of beer — like most goods — is on the rise. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for beer increased +5% in April, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday.
The CPI measures the average price change over time paid by consumers for goods and services.
April’s CPI for all urban consumers increased +0.3% month-over-month, the lowest increase since August 2021. However, that’s coming off a 12-month high of +1.2% from February to March, according to the agency. Over the last 12-month period ending in April, the index for all items has increased +8.3%.
The CPI increase for beer in April outpaced both spirits (+1.7%) and wine (+1.5%). Through the first four months of 2022, the CPI for beer is up +3.7%.
Most publicly traded beer companies have shared plans to increase price given near across the board supply chain challenges.
