VERONA, Wis. – RE: FRESH Radler, which began as class projects within the University of Wisconsin – Madison, is now in commercial production and available in stores. RE: FRESH is a blend of real grapefruit soda and a classic lager beer.
RE: FRESH Radler was created within a public/private partnership including Wisconsin Brewing Company, the UW- Madison Fermentation Sciences Program (Campus Craft Brewery) and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Beginning last fall, students from Campus Craft worked with Wisconsin Brewing staff assisting with the formulation and brewing of the new beer. Student’s from the School of Journalism competed in a program for the branding and marketing for the product’s release.
“This is the fourth year of our partnership with Campus Craft Brewery and we feel the program is stronger than ever. With the tremendous growth of our industry, it’s more important than ever to train our next generation of brewing professionals,” said Carl Nolen, President/CEO at Wisconsin Brewing Company.
Monica Theis, Senior Lecturer at The Department of Food Science was the project liaison at the UW and worked closely with staff from Wisconsin Brewing. “In the spirit of the Wisconsin Idea, we are delighted that our students have an opportunity to apply their knowledge in a real-world setting. They particularly enjoyed learning the production process from formulation to scale up for the market,” Theis said.
“There is no better way to prepare these scientists to serve as the next leaders in the craft brewing industry,” Theis concluded.
The Radler style of beer has a rich history in German-speaking regions and is popular throughout Europe. The term Radler is German for “cyclist” and commonly consists of a mix of beer and fruit soda and is popular with those looking for a refreshing, less-alcoholic beverage.
