Bremerton, WA — Today, the brewers of Silver City unveil an all-new barrel aged project for 2017– Port Wine Barrel-Aged Giant Made of Shadows.
A variation on the brewery’s cult classic Belgian-style strong ale, The Giant Made of Shadows, this new release marries the intense roast character, sweetness, and spiciness of the traditional Belgian ale yeast with the jammy, plum-like character of the fortified wine. In addition, the strong ale is enhanced by the vanillin traits provided by the oak as it undergoes the months-long aging process, mellowing significantly in that time.
In previous years, the Giant Made of Shadows had seen a limited aging in Bourbon Barrels, but this year the brewery decided to embark on a slightly different route.
“Our exceptionally talented Innovation and Barrel-Aging team are always looking to incorporate new and exciting ingredients in the process. We’d talked about doing a Port barrel beer for a few years now, and once those barrels became available, The Giant Made of Shadows was the obvious pairing,” notes marketing rep Dan Frantz, “We love our bourbon at Silver City Brewery, as demonstrated by the barrel-aged variants of Old Scrooge Christmas Ale, Time Traveller Imperial Stout, and Fat Scotch Ale, but we’re extremely excited to try something new and are immensely proud of the work that [program director] Matt Riggs and his team did to bring this project to life. The result is dynamite.”
Port Barrel-Aged Giant Made of Shadows is available today at Silver City Brewery Taproom and Silver City Restaurant in limited draft and 500ml bottles. Bottle availability will extend to specialty bottle shops throughout the state in the coming days.
The official description reads: “The Giant returns to the shadows. Aged in a an oak barrel that formerly housed Port wine, the ale’s deep notes of dark fruit and caramel meld brilliantly with the sweet, jammy plum character imbued within the oaken staves.”

In addition to its barrel-aged variant, The Giant Made of Shadows is currently available as a limited draft and 22oz bottle release.
The description reads: “Behold, The Giant! This strong, dark, malty Belgian-style ale is rich in dark fruit, caramel and coffee character. Run from the shadows, not from the Giant.”
