Last Call: Sierra Nevada Goes Global with Beer Camp; International Brewers Plant US Roots

Sierra Nevada to Introduce Beer Camp Across the World

Building on the success of its two previous collaborative variety packs, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company announced plans this week to brew with six domestic and six international beer companies during the next round of “Beer Camp.”

Dubbed “Beer Camp Across the World,” the new 12-pack — slated for a June release and priced at approximately $25 — will include beers made collaboratively with the following breweries:

  • Avery Brewing Co. (Colorado)
  • Ayinger Brewery (Germany)
  • Boneyard Beer (Oregon)
  • Duvel (Belgium)
  • Fuller’s Brewery (London)
  • Garage Project (New Zealand)
  • Kiuchi Brewery (Japan)
  • Mikkeller (Denmark)
  • Saint Arnold Brewing Co. (Texas)
  • Surly Brewing Co. (Minnesota)
  • The Bruery (California)
  • Tree House Brewing Co. (Massachusetts)

“We’ve circled the world to find some of the most innovative and exciting craft brewers and have brought them together for one epic collaboration 12-pack,” the company wrote on a dedicated Beer Camp webpage.

First conceived in 2014 and originally called “Beer Camp Across America,” the pack itself and coinciding brew fests are aimed at showcasing unique ingredients and highlighting the camaraderie of the craft beer category.

“When we partner with somebody we want to have their influence and our influence to make a proper collaboration,” Bill Manley, a beer ambassador at Sierra Nevada, told All About Beer Magazine. “With the international folks, we asked them to think about something unique to them, what’s unique to their sense of place, so we’ll be able to, theoretically, taste two senses of place.”

BrewDog Set to Open First U.S. Brewpub

Scottish craft beer makers BrewDog will open its first U.S. pub on February 20, the Columbus Dispatch reported Thursday.

The 10,000 sq. ft. restaurant and taproom, part of the company’s $30 million investment into a U.S. brewing facility, will serve a selection of BrewDog beers as well as offerings from other breweries, the outlet said.

The taproom is connected to the company’s new Canal Winchester brewery location, where BrewDog hopes to begin brewing next month.

Hitachino Nest to Open San Francisco Outpost

Kiuchi Brewery Inc., which makes the popular line of Hitachino Nest beers, is gearing up to open its first U.S. restaurant.

Located in San Francisco, the new joint — Hitachino Beer & Waygu — is billed as a “kappo-style” restaurant similar to a tapas bar.

“The idea at Hitachino is to have a progressive, interactive meal,” wrote Eater SF. “It’s less raucous than an izakaya, but more relaxed than a traditional sushi counter.”

Another Brewery Closes Its Doors

Citing “several struggles” throughout 2016, Colorado’s Mu Brewery will close on February 18, the company wrote on Facebook Monday.

Based in Aurora, located six miles from downtown Denver, the brewery had been planning to open a second location that would have tripled the company’s brewing capacity, according to Denver Westword.

Nathan Flatland, who founded Mu Brewery in 2014, told Westword that an investor who promised to back the project turned out to “be a scam.”

“We rallied quickly to see if the Small Business Administration would go in with us, but we couldn’t get it to work,” he told the outlet.
