Covington, KY — Braxton Brewing Company is reviving a historic Covington beer brand with its new Bavarian Style Select Lager to be released in Northern Kentucky exclusively. This light lager will be tapped in Braxton’s Covington taproom on Thursday, September 21st — just steps from where the beer was originally brewed.
“We have always looked at the Bavarian Brewing Building as an icon in the City of Covington,” said Jake Rouse, Co-Founder & CEO of Braxton Brewing Company. “When we saw the opportunity to resurrect the brand, we thought it would be an incredible way to give a tip of the hat to where Covington is headed.”
Bavarian Brewing Company was originally founded in Covington in 1866. In 1906, the brewery expanded into the building that is still standing on 12th Street in Covington. By 1914, Bavarian Brewing Company was producing 216,000 barrels annually and the largest brewery in the state of Kentucky.
Post-prohibition, between 1947 and 1952, the brewery was operating around the clock to meet demand of its key brands: Bavarian’s Old Style, Bavarian Master Brand and Bavarian Bock. At the end of this timeframe, the brewery began to struggle against larger brands with national advertising and lower costs. Eventually, Bavarian Brewery was forced to close in 1966, 100 years after it was founded.
Braxton Brewing Company has partnered with the non-profit Brewery District CURC and the Brewing Heritage Trail to pay homage to the region’s past and celebrate its future. At the tapping event on September 21st, guests will be able to take a short shuttle from Braxton to the currently vacant Bavarian Brewery building for an exclusive walking tour of the historic space. Tour space is limited, so the first 30 guests who register and provide a $25 donation to the non-profit Brewing Heritage Trail will be able to attend. Tickets can be purchased here, and include a beer in the taproom after the tour. In addition, the Brewing Heritage Trail will have Bavarian brewing history on display in the taproom.
Bavarian Style Select Lager is a light lager and will initially be available exclusively on draft in Northern Kentucky. The lager checks in at 4% ABV and 11 IBUs.
“After deciding to bring this historic brand back to life it was time to do some research,” said Evan Rouse, Co-Founder & COO of Braxton Brewing Company. “We wanted to create a beer that was both representative of the Bavarian brand and heritage, but also have the ability to put a unique modern twist, on it as well. The Bavarian Style Select Lager is a clean, refreshing light lager that features noble hops that drive enough flavor and bitterness to balance the base beer.”
The currently-vacant building has been a subject of public interest as the city, county and state debated its future use. However, the plans are now in place for the building to become the home for Kenton County Government. The main building will stay intact with a new building being constructed directly adjacent to the current structure.
