(Iowa City, Iowa | October 29th, 2024) — Big Grove Brewery is introducing Kernza® Lager in partnership with Patagonia Provisions, the food and beverage division of outdoor apparel company Patagonia. The Patagonia Provisions x Big Grove Kernza® Lager is made with 100% organic ingredients, which delivers not only a light beer with exceptional flavor, but also supports environmentally friendly farming practices.
Kernza®, a deeply-rooted regenerative perennial grain, has the potential to transform the brewing industry. It stabilizes soil, requires minimal tilling, increases soil organic matter, and improves soil structure and water-holding capacity. Ongoing research also shows that Kernza draws down and stores more carbon in the soil than annual grains. When used in beer, it adds a deliciously rich, but subtle, nutty flavor.
Big Grove joins Patagonia Provisions in its brewery partnership program with other independent craft breweries across the U.S., each brewing regional-specific lager-style beers made with Regenerative Organic Certified® Kernza and organic ingredients. Through this collaboration, Big Grove Brewery and Patagonia Provisions hope to raise awareness about the potential of Kernza® and other regenerative crops to transform the agricultural industry. The goal is to encourage more farmers to adopt sustainable practices and build a more resilient food system for future generations. “While we continue to produce high quality beer, our drinkers are increasingly seeking lighter, and organic options that are transparent in what they offer and they know contribute to environmental sustainability.” said Bryan Farrell, Director of Marketing at Big Grove. “We are in an agricultural production state, this is important not just to us, but the communities we are in.” he closed with.
Together, Big Grove and Patagonia Provisions are advancing the movement to scale regenerative and organic ingredients in beer that help fight the climate crisis. “We are excited to partner with Big Grove Brewery in this joint effort.” says Paul Lightfoot, General Manager of Patagonia Provisions. “They are passionate and dedicated to responsible brewing and business practices, guided by core values and principles that align with our mission. Big Grove Brewery is helping lead the industry toward a brighter future and we're proud to collaborate with them.” Big Grove Brewery’s Kernza Lager will be available on draft at all four of its taprooms in Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, Iowa City, and Solon starting this Friday November 1st. Limited-edition Patagonia and Big Grove merchandise will also be available for purchase in the taprooms. As the partnership with Patagonia Provisions evolves, Big Grove looks forward to continuing the conversation about expanding this collaboration.
