SAN FRANCISCO (September 2024) – Tony Gemignani, 13-time world pizza champion and legendary Bay Area restaurateur, is thrilled to debut ‘Tony’s Pizzaweizen’, an exclusive pizza and beer duo created in collaboration with San Francisco’s Black Hammer Brewing Company. ‘Tony’s Pizzaweizen’ pizza uses an exclusive craft beer by Black Hammer Brewing Company within its dough recipe; meanwhile, the ‘Tony’s Pizzaweizen’ exclusive craft beer is produced using wheat berries from Tony’s proprietary Type 00 Pizza Flour. The limited-edition pizza, hefeweizen-style beer, and ‘Tony’s Pizzaweizen’ combo – featuring one Detroit style pizza and two pints of the beer – are now on the menu at Gemignani’s famed restaurants, Tony’s Pizza Napoletana and Capo’s in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood.
“It’s been really fun to collaborate and get creative with another San Francisco-based company like Black Hammer Brewing Company to produce a pizza and beer mash-up for the ages,” said Gemignani. “I’m thankful to the Black Hammer Brewing Company team for being open to this idea and helping to develop a unique offering that combines and celebrates a few of my favorite things - pizza, beer, premium ingredients, and the Bay Area community. I am excited for our friends and guests to taste this delicious pairing that has been a true labor of love.”
An avid beer enthusiast with a preference for hefeweizens—a type of German white beer—Gemignani was eager to create a signature brew to be enjoyed alongside the many pizza styles he serves at his restaurants. With the help of Beverage Manager Nick Lawlor, he discovered Black Hammer Brewing Company based in San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) neighborhood and quickly fell in love with their story and unique selection of craft beers. The hefeweizen, in particular, stood out and after meeting the team behind the kegs, it became clear to Gemignani that this vision could turn into reality.
From there, Gemignani, Black Hammer Brewing Company’s Founder Jim Furman, and their respective teams got to work testing beer and pizza recipes until they landed on the ‘Tony’s Pizzaweizen’ combo that is available today. Further expanding on the local aspect of the partnership, Gemignani and Furman commissioned renowned San Francisco artist Jeremy Fish to design the beer can label, which features a custom illustration that represents elements from both the Gemignani and Black Hammer brands.
Tony’s Pizza Napoletana and Capo’s will exclusively serve the ‘Tony’s Pizzaweizen’ pizza, which comes with two cans or pints of the Tony-inspired hefeweizen ($61) and will be limited to 12 per day at both locations. The combo will be limited The pizza, made using honey malted dough using the ‘Tony’s Pizzaweizen’ beer, is topped with carnitas cooked in oranges, G&S Farms corn, mozzarella, white cheddar, brick cheese, Maldon salt, orange juice mist, sweety drop peppers, citrus lime tajin aioli, an orange wedge to squeeze and thinly sliced serrano peppers on the side ($45). The bright flavors pair nicely with the light beer, which was produced with wheat berries from Tony’s Type 00 Pizza Flour from Central Milling, offering refreshing citrus and tropical notes in addition to an orange slice garnish ($8.50/16 oz can or $8/12 oz draft).
“Creativity has always been a main principle at Black Hammer Brewing Company and we could not be more thrilled to join forces with pizza master and Bay Area icon, Tony Gemignani, who also appreciates a little fun, to create this unique, San Francisco-inspired pizza and beer duo,” said Furman. “We are honored to be pouring our beer at Tony’s famed restaurants and excited for the regulars, locals and countless visitors that come through his doors to try it.”
In addition to offering the pizza-beer combo at Tony’s Pizza Napoletana and Capo’s, the exclusive beer is available for purchase by the can (16 oz) at select Slice House by Tony Gemignani locations throughout Northern and Southern California as well as Giovanni Italian Specialties in San Francisco.
