We are hiring to fill a production team role in brewing and cellaring and are comfortable bringing in the right person regardless of the level of professional experience. We have a talented, skilled, and experienced production team in place right now, so this new hire can come from a wide range of experience, from a very well-practiced homebrewer all the way through someone with "head brewer" on their resume.

Depending on where you are now, we have a range of leadership and growth opportunities across domains such as brewery administration, product quality, sensory evaluation, mixed-ferm beer, clean barrel-aged beer, blended beverage, production management, etc. The strength of our existing team and high standards for our production operation make it possible to modulate these responsibilities as we make this hire.


This position is full-time, hourly, non-exempt (overtime eligible). Expected hours are 30-45 hours per week, typically between 6 AM and 7 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend assignments. Upon completion of training across brew and cellar operations, flexible scheduling is possible if you prefer to bend outside the 9-5 M-F standard. The Brewer / Cellar Person reports to the head of brewing operations.


About Cinderlands:


Cinderlands Beer Co. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, seeks a passionate, diligent, detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Brewer / Cellar person at the Cinderlands Warehouse. Our brewing staff operates a 15 BBL brewhouse with 15 BBL and 30 BBL fermentation vessels, brite serving tanks, lager tanks, a centrifuge, and a canning line in an urban brewpub setting. We will produce about 5,000 BBLs of draft and packaged beer in 2024, with the majority of it going it into self-distribution and wholesale distribution and the remainder being served on-site at our brewpubs and suburban taproom.


The Cinderlands Warehouse is a 300+ seat brewpub that opened in May 2019, just 1.5 miles from the original Cinderlands Foederhouse brewery and its Long Story Short retail concept. Both pubs have inventive, professional kitchen teams led by talented chefs who are our partners in delivering exceptional experiences to our guests. Cinderlands was named one of the best new breweries in the country in 2018 by USA Today and Hop Culture Magazine, and one of the 10 best breweries in the country in 2019 by Hop Culture Magazine. We have won two gold medals at the Great American Beer Festival and two gold medals at the World Beer Cup.

Brewer / Cellar Person responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:


  • Potential leadership/growth domains listed above
  • Cleaning and filling kegs, including transporting kegs for cleaning
  • Transporting materials and finished product between brewery locations and off-site storage
  • Racking beer between fermentors and brite tanks
  • Cleaning and sanitizing tanks and other brewery equipment
  • Harvesting and pitching yeast, dry-hopping
  • Monitoring beer in tank by sensory evaluation and measurement
  • Milling grain
  • Mashing, boiling, and chilling in wort
  • Working safely and efficiently
  • Maintaining safe conditions for other employees and visitors
  • Receiving, organizing, and packing shipments
  • Counting and recording inventory thoroughly and accurately
  • Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and orderliness in the production area
  • Following production SOPs and contributing to their ongoing development
  • Keeping accurate, timely, and legible records
  • Maintaining and repairing mechanical equipment to ensure safe and timely production of finished beer
  • Communicating with management to understand and fulfill responsibilities
  • Reporting safety, maintenance, or beer quality issues to supervisors
  • Representing Cinderlands Beer Co. in a positive way and avoiding actions, statements, and situations that are not reflective of Cinderlands' culture, standards, and good standing in the community
  • Assignment to on- and off-site consumer-facing events outside of normal working hours, e.g. trade shows, beer dinners, and beer festivals
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications and desirable traits:

  • Passion for beer and brewing demonstrated by professional brewing experience, homebrewing experience, or formal or self-led education
  • Ability to demonstrate repeatable, unsupported proficiency of complicated and sensitive tasks after training, practice, and feedback

  • A valid and current driver's license and ability to load, unload, and locally drive a commercial van or truck (no CDL required)
  • Ability to lift 55-pound bags above shoulder height
  • Ability to lift and carry 55-pound bags
  • Ability to climb ladders
  • Ability to push and pull 165-pound kegs along floor
  • Ability to unload 2,500-pound pallets of grain and sugar, 50-55 pounds at a time
  • Ability to work in tight spaces with low clearance for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in extreme hot and cold temperatures for short periods of time
  • Ability to work with hazardous chemicals and wear personal protective equipment
  • Ability to travel by car, train, and airplane
  • 21 years of age or older

 

Compensation:

Competitive wage based on experience.
