The Black Abbey Brewing Company is a production style microbrewery with attached taproom in South Nashville.  With over ten years experience, we specialize in “traditional” beer styles rooted in European history; our taproom even taps a fresh cask on our beer engine every Wednesday.  We are currently looking for an Assistant Brewer to join our production staff.  Main duties will be wort production and fermentation tracking, but every BOH employee will be expected to perform cellar tasks not limited to packaging, keg cleaning, and warehouse duties.  This job opportunity is ideal for someone beginning their brewing career or looking to expand their skills.


Typical Job Duties:

l  Wort production on a 20 barrel, 2 vessel Premier brewhouse. 

l  Recipe formulation and wort production on a 1 barrel, Ruby Street pilot brew system.

l  Monitor fermentation in our three 40bbl, five 60bbl, and two 80bbl fermenters.  Perform beer maintenance tasks as required (gravity checks, trub dumps, dry hopping from heights of 20-30ft).

l  Yeast Wrangling (harvesting, checking viability using a microscope, and re-pitching accordingly).

l  Safely maneuver supplies throughout warehouse using two-wheeler, pallet jack, stand on forklift, and scissor-lift.

l  Perform general maintenance as needed on pumps, brew deck, equipment, etc….

l  CIP fermenters, brites, and brew deck.  Assist in weekly general cleaning of the facility.

l  Opportunity to eventually cross-train on Della Toffola DE Filter and CASK canning line.


What We Offer

l  Starting Pay: 20-22$ / hr, BOE.  Opportunity for yearly review and pay discussions.

l  Schedule M-F, 40 hrs.  Average workday is in 7a-5p time frame, but flexible depending on production and employee needs (Brew days can start earlier and/or end later). 

l  2 hrs PTO / 40 hrs worked (average 2.5 weeks / year, yearly rollover).

Helpful Skills & Experience

l  Experience: Previous brewing experience is desirable, but willing to train up the right candidate.  Basic understanding of brewing principles required.

l  Attention to Detail: Paying attention to written SOP’s and recipes, taking detailed notes, and monitoring for off-flavors in order to ensure the highest quality product is reaching consumers.  Using the same skills to efficiently utilize raw materials, reduce waste, and maintain strong sanitation practices.

l  Effective Communication: Ability to communicate with team in order to assure all daily tasks are completed and relay any issues or changes in a timely manner.  Possess active listening skills and an ability to pivot tasks when needed.   

l  Safety: Following written and verbal directions when handling chemicals, hot liquid, and pressurized systems.  Having the awareness to avoid dangerous situations not only for yourself, but for everyone working around you.

l  Work Ethic: Problem solver, self starter, and organized.  Taking pride in their contributions to the finished product and wanting to grow within their position on the team.  

l  Vibes: Be yourself and respect other staff members’ rights to do the same.  Bonus points for a healthy pun game or love of corny jokes.

l  Basic Computer Skills: Daily use of programs like Ekos and Excel for materials management and batch tracking.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

l  Regularly lift 55 pounds shoulder high, manipulate 165 pounds with help, and safely climb ladders.

l  Able to safely work in an environment that can get loud and range in temperature.

l  Able to safely handle chemicals and manipulate clamps and valves.

l  Stand for 8-10 hrs, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, and lift.
