On-premise value velocity increased +6% nationally in the week ending June 25 compared to the week before, continuing “similar seasonal patterns” to previous years, the market research firm CGA reported today.
The most recent week-over-week increase was the result of a +4% increase in ticket count and +2% increase in check value. The week included the Juneteenth federal holiday, observed on Monday, June 20.
In all five key states observed by NielsenIQ-owned CGA, sales velocity increased week-over-week: New York (+10%); Florida (+8%); Texas (+6%); California (+3%); and Illinois (+3%). The increases in New York, Illinois and Texas were driven by high performances outside of the states’ key cities: +14% week-over-week in non-key cities in New York, +9% in Illinois and +7% in Texas.
Year-over-year (YOY), sales velocity increased +7% nationally compared to the same week in 2021. Three of the five observed states increased YOY, led by New York (+22%), followed by Illinois (+11%) and California (+7%).
Sales velocity in Florida (-4%) and Texas (-3%) declined YOY. Cities in both states had fewer restrictions for the on-premise in 2021 compared to cities in the other observed states, resulting in tougher YOY comps.
CGA will release complete on-premise data for the Independence Day holiday in a few weeks. While a traditionally off-premise holiday, the on-premise channel is still expected to see a boost during the evening hours of the holiday weekend, as well as on the holiday itself, which fell on a Monday, compared to a typical Monday, the firm previously reported.
