The Brewery Manager (BM) is responsible for leading the brewing team and daily management of hourly staff to produce flawless and consistent beer. The BM helps keep brewing staff on the forefront excellence, precision, and accountability. As a “working manager,” the BM will teach, train, and grow the brewing team to be well-rounded, top brewers, with high degrees of autonomy in their assigned tasks.


Key Results Areas:


  • Leader: BM is responsible for training, guiding, and growing the team to become educated, efficient, and well-rounded brewers
  • Provide additional labor in brewery as needed to ensure staff breaks and seamless ops
  • Ability to operate all brewery equipment, including canning line
  • Enforce safety protocols and ensure staff follow safe practices in brewing operations
  • Ensure team implements all cleaning and sanitation protocols
  • Create daily task lists that provide specific direction for all brewing staff
  • Oversee all daily brewing, cellaring, transferring, & canning/bottling operations
  • Follow through with training for each brewery employee to meet goals and execute tasks without issue
  • Lead the team in improving their methods and become consistent in hitting all targets & goals
  • Maintain constant communication with operations management team (Brewmaster & Distribution) on any issues and their development
  • Managing scheduling for all brewery employees, including weekly timecard audits
  • Ensure proper staffing levels for all daily ops to minimize/eliminate overtime
  • Communicate all objectives clearly to brewing staff to ensure team understanding
  • Conduct annual performance reviews & periodic disciplinary reviews for brewing staff
  • Work in coordination with and at the direction of the Brewmaster to ensure staff maintain and regularly inspect all critical brewery equipment, infrastructure, and subsystems
  • Monitor yeast through cell counts performed with every pitch
  • Record all yeast-related lab data and monitor yeast health for vitality & viability
  • Troubleshoot basic mechanical issues in the brewery and work with Brewmaster on repair plans
  • Author and revise SOPs to ensure uniform processes & procedures


        

Quality Finished Beer Production:


Quality finished beer through team management is the most important part of the BM’s job. Beer produced by Beachwood must be consistent, free from defects, true to style and of the highest quality. The beer produced must maintain Beachwood’s award-winning and respected reputation. An industry leader among breweries, Beachwood depends on the BM to work with the Brewmaster to make top decisions and actions with quality, consistency, and efficiency in mind. A beer is not released from the brewery without the Brewmaster and BM approving the taste and quality of the product. The BM attends all taste panels and alerts upper management of any foreseen issues in the process or finished product.


Knowledge and Skill:


Well-rounded management skills, a related degree (science, engineering, or formal brewing), and a minimum of 3-5 years of brewery supervisory/management experience is needed for successful candidacy. Good verbal and written communication skills, mathematical, and analytical skills are required. Interpersonal and motivational skills are required. A full understanding of beer science, brewhouse, cellar, & canning operations are a must. Past brewery management experience will be helpful. Prior experience running a canning line is a huge plus.


Job Complexity:


This position requires good time management, communication skills, project management, and people skills. The BM must be able to multi-task and stay focused on objectives. While timeliness is important, quality and thoroughness are paramount. This position requires complex planning and scheduling of the workforce in coordination with production needs. This is a working manager position. The BM is expected to provide supplemental labor as needed to fill in any gaps. The BM is expected to understand how to operate all pieces of equipment related to brewing, packaging, & processing.


Decision Making/ Responsibilities:

Many of the major quality decisions are done at a team level; The BM has the authority to make most day-to-day operational decisions for his department in keeping with company goals, objectives, & SOPs. The Brewmaster must always be looped in on critical decisions.


Accountability:


The BM reports directly to the Brewmaster.


Relationships and Work Environment:


The BM is primarily a self-managed position with daily-to-weekly structured direction and communication with the Brewmaster. The Beachwood operation has a well-rounded brewery team that works together to meet company goals. Job Requirements:

• High school diploma - Formal brewing education preferred, or college degree preferred

• Ability to work and communicate well with all staff

• Organized and detail oriented; accurate record keeping skills

• Basic troubleshooting skills in a brewing/manufacturing setting

• Valid driver’s license

• Ability to safely operate a forklift

• Flexible schedule: 1st & 2nd shift availability, along with weekends as needed

• Perform basic algebra and other mathematics related to brewing


Physical Requirements:

• Lift 55 lbs from ground to shoulder high

• Lift 110 lbs from ground to waist high and moving 150 lbs along the floor

• Climb stairs, ramps, and ladders

• Work in small and confined spaces

• Work safely with chemicals with reasonable safety accommodations

• Work in loud environment with basic safety accommodations
