Brewbound is pleased to announce its first group of speakers for the upcoming Brew Talks meetup, happening on March 10 at the Coronado brewery & tasting room in San Diego, Calif.
Trying to define “craft beer” in today’s ever-evolving beer category is something a number of brewery owners struggle with. The Brewers Association has its own definition, categorizing beer companies based on size, ownership and the kinds of ingredients used in their brews. To be craft, in the eyes of the BA, you must remain small, independent and traditional.
But when a company like Anheuser-Busch InBev opens its wallet and starts buying up small craft breweries — like Oregon’s 10 Barrel or Seattle’s Elysian Brewing — once “independent” businesses are stripped of their craft credentials. Brewers who sell to private equity firms, however, are allowed to stay in the club.
But how do those within the industry decide what’s craft and what’s not? And how do consumers define craft? Several other industry stakeholders, and consumers, categorize the craft segment not by ownership but by brands — even those the BA would say are “non-craft.”
So what is craft beer? Societe Brewing’s Douglas Constantiner, O’Brien’s Pub/Nickel Beer Company owner Tom Nickel, and Coronado Brewing co-founder Shawn DeWitt will debate the topic at next week’s Brew Talks.

About Brew Talks:
Since hosting our first event in the basement of a craft beer bar in Boston in 2013, the meetup series has developed into a multi-city tour where beer industry professionals can come together inside of some of the country’s most recognizable craft breweries and share business insights with one another. In less than two years, we’ve hosted 19 meetups, in 15 U.S. cities, and connected with thousands of individuals from all tiers of the industry. The events are also broadcast globally via a free live stream.
